You Have to Begin

Today was the October Clinical Collaboration gathering, and it was (as usual) full of energy, inspiration and connection.

We had the pleasure of welcoming a special guest, Christy Shell, a life and career coach (from our very own Troy, OH). Christy introduced us to her business (check out www.zealcoach.com) and we explored opportunities to collaborate and grow. Christy brought along a client who was curious about what it takes to become a mental health professional—and what unfolded next was pure magic!

We each shared our winding, unpredictable paths to where we are today.  Our unexpected career shifts were filled with twists and turns, but each of those detours shaped who we are today.

The common thread? Every one of us faced those inevitable curveballs that life throws our way, learned from them, and found a way to begin again. It's moments like these that remind us: the journey isn’t meant to be a straight line. It’s the bumps, the turns, the reinventions, the learning (and relearning!) and the connections that make us who we are.

There is a beautiful poem that is currently making its way around the internet.  In this world dominated by perfection everywhere you look, it’s a wonderful reminder that we all have to (and get to!) begin – not once but many, many times in our lives. Here are the first few lines of her poem:

The First Step

by Sophie Diener

You have to begin

Go, do it badly at first, with sweaty palms and shaky limbs and gaps in what you know.

You have to start, and perhaps you won’t feel ready, or like you’ve fully prepared.

To read or hear the entire poem, check out her posts on Instagram or TikTok. She also has a print of the poem for sale on Etsy.

We left today’s Clinical Collaboration not only with fresh ideas and new possibilities but with a deeper appreciation for the unique stories we each carry.  We may begin to write this blog weekly – imagine how much it will change and we will learn from that process!!  Happy October everyone!
